From the 1990 Harley Davidson owner's manual:

Horsepower on the 80 c.i. (1340 cc) engine is 69.5 HP at 5000 RPM, 54 HP at 4500 RPM for the California models (different emission laws)

For the Sportster 1200 cc engine, 68 HP @ 6000 RPM
For the Sportster 883, 55 HP at 6000 RPM

If the salesman you talked to didn't know how to find this information it's a good thing you didn't want to buy a bike from him, he's the dumbest salesman who ever lived.

By the way, the power to weight ratio on Harleys is better than on a lot of the other big bikes. My FXR weighs in at 575 lbs. dry weight, lots less than the Honda Moldwing, I mean Goldwing, which weighs in at what, 1000 lbs? Any Honda owners out there that can tell me the HP & weight of the Moldwing? I mean Goldwing.
